Lee's Story
At the age of two Lee took a tricycle down a medium sized hill and yelled “Kowabunga dude!”...that was the first inclination of his adventurous spirit. Another time probably just a year later Lee, DJ, and their friend Justin took a kiddy pool down a rock bank for fun. Needless to say, Lee ended up hurting his head pretty badly but still wanted to “do that again”. Our Mom wouldn’t allow it though.
Lee was always willing to help; especially when he got older. He was very crafty and could pretty much pick up anything that he attempted to do very quickly. I remember best the cooking. He loved cooking! Venison was definitely his forte but he could cook anything and it would taste wonderful. He would always add maple syrup, if he could, to the recipe.
Lee was a leader in school also. He was an avid athlete and a great student in his field of forestry. Lee’s strongest suit in school was his willingness to support anyone in any situation. As he got older his desire to help others seemed to become stronger and stronger. Once he got his Chevy S-10 he never hesitated to stop for someone in need of help on the side of the road. At one point in high school he became so passionate in helping one person from being harassed by another student that he got into a fight. He was suspended, of course, but told the principal that he “Understood why he had to be punished, but he couldn’t let his classmate be abused in that manner.”
Lee was genuine. When he gave you a hug, he really gave you a hug. He gave the most sincere advice, but asked for it just as much. He was never pompous or overly proud. He never wanted more out of life; he was 100% satisfied with what he had.
It has been claimed that he tried save the other young man who passed away on the same night as he. Whether that be true or not, Lee passed on a hero in the eyes of all of his friends and family...not for that particular situation necessarily, but for the way he lived life, the respect he had for others, and the love that he held in his heart for everyone and everything.
One thing you may not know about Lee is just how much he loved God. Through several deep discussions with close family members, talk of being a priest at a young age, and finally receiving his belongings from Paul Smith's which contained our children's bibles. He kept Christ close even when he didn't necessarily want to with all the "experiences" that college life brings.
This is why the scholarship organization was started. Lee's mother Renee knew that there were others out there who had the same characteristics as her son. She also knew that, like Lee, there were many students who needed that extra push to help them with their college expenses. In this way we celebrate Lee's life, by helping others to achieve their goals.
